A Gastroenterology physician profile and job description for individuals interested in a career in Gastroenterology. A Gastroenterology physician or GI doctor as sometimes called will usually spend a great amount of their time diagnosing digestive related problems, and in providing routine preventative care and surgical procedures of the colon by performing hundreds of colonscopies. Many times these colonscopies can be performed in an outpatient surgery center or surgery suite owned by the Gastroenterologist, and provide a significant amount of additional income. Gastroenterology is not only a nice paying physician specialty, but another benefit is that the call amount and difficulty can be less than other physician specialties. The minimum educational training for a Gastroenterology doctor is a four-year bachelors degree, usually in a science, four years of medical school, three year residency in internal medicine, and a three year fellowship in Gastroenterology. Compensation for a Gastroenterology physician can be somewhere between $250,000 to $325,00 a year depending on location, experience and practice setup.
